Mermaids are an ocean dwelling humanoid species. Unlike most other species, no god has created them, not that there aren't many religious sects of mermaids. A lot of marine life, including mermaids, were spared from the purge of the rest of Skal, as they are very isolated from the surface world. This has allowed them to evolve over millions of years, making their appearence different form race to race.
Subspecies and children: The many Subspecies within the race is many. They have evolved to appear simlar to other ocean life such as sharks, tropical fish, octopi, corals and whales. The different enviroments have also caused a variety of changes, some deep sea mermaids tend to be significantly smaller, while others are considered deep sea gigants. The great many Subspecies also makes "mating" complicated. If both parents are simlar, such as taking after crabs, there will be very few complications within the child. If, howver, mermaids of great variety have children, such as a mermard taking after a squid and another a dolphin, the child may be disfigured when they hatch from its egg.
Children in general Mermaid babies are conceived of two adult mermaids laying their eggs on top of each others, causing the eggs to merge together and form one egg with a baby inside. Since mermaids are monogender female and are not capable of intercourse, having a baby with someone is not neccicarily a romantic thing. Friends and lovers alike have babies with eachother. With family, it is not adviced as even when theres no inapropriate feelings towards that family member, the child will still be the product of inbreeding and can have serious health complications, such as not developing gills properly.
